I lost my FIRST tooth today in first grade!

I wish I had a blog post for every time kiddos lost their teeth.  I actually did use to post pics of them, but I wish I could tell the special story of each and every one, because it really is a BIG deal with you loose your first-ever tooth!  Often, though, I don’t witness the celebration because it happens at home, or the tooth falls out at lunch, or we’re just busy doing other things.

But today was different. 🙂

We had our 4th round of Robinson University today, and as is tradition now in our class after a super morning of RU learning, we shared with our classmates about the learning that had happened in each session we had attended.  Several friends were showing us the stop-motion videos they had made (one of which was Hailey), when all of a sudden I looked at her and in addition to her iPad she had a TOOTH in her hand.  It had actually fallen out of her mouth as she was talking!! :). (Which by the way is exactly how my son’s teeth all fell out–I never had to pull a single one, which I am SO GLAD about! #teethpullingmakesmequeasy)

“I lost my tooth! I lost my tooth! I lost my tooth!” she excitedly screamed while she tried not to drop her iPad on the floor.  I realized by the way she couldn’t say anything else that this was maybe the FIRST time this had happened, so I asked her if that was the case and she excitedly nodded.  Of course everyone was excited and she then balanced a few minutes of showing off her new “lost” tooth and receiving hugs from friends. 🙂

Remember how I said that often this moment is missed by me and our classmates?  Well I decided not to let this one pass us by, so I decided we should ALL escort our friend to the nurse to get her tooth necklace.  Yep, we all dropped what we were doing and made the journey to the nurse’s office.

Needless to say she was a little worried when she saw and ENTIRE class of little ones show up at once (which of course, would definitely be TERRIBLE if we were indeed all sick at the same time!  Man, I cannot even imagine…), but once I explained, she seemed totally fine with our whole-class visit.

Nurse Difani proceeded to do her normal “nurse” things and help Hailey rinse our her mouth, choose her tooth necklace and then put her tooth on the bulletin board as she joined the Lost Tooth Club.  I know, right?  What a special membership!!

By the way, I also love how excited Zach obviously is!  This really IS a BIG deal for first graders–even when it’s not their tooth!

I noticed as we were looking at the board, that we had several other kiddos how had joined the club this year, so we had to make sure to document them, too:

Again, I WISH I could have this kind of special story for EVERY SINGLE KIDDO when the lose their first tooth, but unfortunately that is not possible. I will, though, try hard to document as many other “firsts” as I can on this blog throughout this year, and then try again next year to catch all those precious first-lost-teeth.

Do you have a “first-lost-tooth” story to share?  We’d LOVE TO HEAR it!  Oh, and since I’m feeling nostalgic and this is my blog, so I can be indulgent (hee hee), I have to share the video of my baby’s first lost tooth (and yes, that baby is now in middle school!).  And yes, I know it’s STUPID that it’s recorded the wrong direction, but it’s just too sweet not to share. Please just tilt your head.  🙂

Pictures of the Day: May 6, 2015

Ok, hold on tight–today was a VERY eventful day and so this post is picture-heavy. I think I counted 10.  But then I may have added more. 🙂  You ready?  Let’s go!

I usually put the pics in these posts in order based on when they happen, so these would come first anyway, but I’m also putting them first because I think they set the tone for the whole day.  The way things usually work in Rm. 202 is that I have a plan and then we decide how that will work for us that day, and often times things change (sometimes really drastically, sometime they just take a little bit different direction).

I was meeting with a group today and after our book, we got out our whiteboards for word work.  I remembered that we had talked about a chart/sign to help kiddos remember what to do with the pencil sharpener (we just got 2 new crank ones–you know, old school!) and for some reason people are CRAZY with them.  What I know about what this group knows and what they need, they were the ones to make the chart!  As we talked about what the sign should be called, they agreed that “PENCIL SHARPENER RULES” would make sense (like the chart we made to help our friends remember how to wisely use our construction paper).  As we got started talking about how to write PENCIL, we clapped out the syllables, wrote the PEN part and started working on the CIL chunk, talking about how it could either be PENSIL  or PENCIL.  It wasn’t a clear decision about which was correct (I thought for sure they’d be able to tell which one looked right), so I took it to mean we needed to learn something new.  So we started talking about C and how it has a soft sound and a hard sound.

Now…being me and doing what I do, I didn’t just start saying something like “Now these are the rules for hard C and soft C and when the C proceeds these letters it’s this and when it’s these it’s that,”–you get the idea.  Instead, we started making  a list of C words and put them in the correct column together.  Almost immediately, Makayla noticed that there were lots of Os on the hard side.  We kept going and pretty soon we noticed that the letters on the soft C side were E and I and that the other letters were on the other list.  Voila! We had a rule.  Well at least a conjecture that we thought we could use and teach our friends.

So…being Rm. 202 friends and doing what we do, we thought another sign was in order.  This one they decided to hang on the word wall–right by the letter C. 🙂  Hopefully we’ll finish soon.  Who knows?  We’re working on at least 3 other interactive writing projects and we’ve only got 15 more days!  Oh well, guess there’s always next year!

Whew! That was a long one. Ok…so I know that it looks like Nate is just being a super-silly 1st grader in this picture, but he’s actually posing like that for a reason. I tried to kill 3 stones with this one picture and show you: the yummy (and tiny) chocolate bar and SUPER cute gift card he brought from Whole Foods today (yep, I said CUTE–there’s a picture next to show the detail) AND the tooth he lost on Monday. Ok, I guess he didn’t actually lose it, he had to get it taken out but it’s gone nevertheless and you can finally see his big ‘ole grown-up tooth coming through!

See, I told you it was cute! It’s funny because without the scale of that bag to Nate in the previous picture you don’t see the funny size of these 2 objects. It will be hard to spend that gift card because it is seriously one of the cutest things I have ever seen. I told the kids I’d probably ask for it back after I redeem it and save it in my Writer’s Notebook. Um…just because that’s what I do. 🙂

C.J. and I worked really hard with build a castle with the Lincoln Logs during choice time today.  It’s the first time I’ve done that.  So fun!  The rest of the class was really impressed too, I guess, because they kept coming over to take pictures of their own!

Um…yeah, so this happened during choice time, too: Emily made me a bonnet! She came over at one point and had to measure the string so she’d know the strap was the right size, and she pointed out how she put a little tag in it, too, so I’d know what way was the back. First graders are kind of amazing, I’d say!

Alright, two more, and these fit into the I’ve-officially-lost-track-of-how-many-teeth-we’ve-lost category.  I am pretty sure it’s over 20 now, but needless to say, 1st grade mouths are VERY HOLEY at this time of year.  So cute!!

I Hope MY Teeth Don’t Fall Out!

I am pretty sure that we are up to tooth #16 lost in Rm. 202! And yes, I’m starting to get worried that MY teeth will start falling out!   This week has been especially fruitful in the tooth-loosing venue, and yesterday was no different.  C.J. lost one during Read Aloud and so got to join the Lost Tooth Club in the Nurse’s office!

And you know, I’m expecting to hear about another one from the weekend–Amelia was working really hard on a loose one today (big bites in her apple at lunch!).  CRAZY stuff in first grade these days!  I’d forgotten how exciting being 7YO is!!

Toothless First Graders!!–We’re Losing Count Around Here!

Man, oh man–our teeth are falling out left and right around here.  It’s like those movies you have about losing all of your teeth, except this is for real!  Well and that it’s a normal part of first grade life.

Like I said in the title, I really have lost count with what number we’re on.  Here’s what I know. I took this amazingly cute picture yesterday:

CAM01657Ok, so JK looks a little silly, but he had to show you what happened–he lost both of his two front teeth at the SAME TIME!!  What are the chances?  Peyton showed off his new hole on the bottom.  And THEN he told me how special this tooth was and how the Tooth Fairy didn’t come yet because he had to write a note to her to ask her not to take his tooth away because it was his first one and then…WAIT–what?  Your very first tooth?  Well then you deserve your very own picture, buddy! Say cheese!

CAM01658And to top it off, right after this, he went to get one of those little tooth necklaces.  Cuz you just gotta. 🙂

But we weren’t finished yet!  Remember how Evan lost a front tooth last week that had been hanging on for a while?  Well, the other one was just about done so I sent him down to check out getting it pulled out.  ANOTHER lost tooth!!

CAM01660This place is just too much fun!  Happy Tooth-Losing, Rm. 202 friends!!  🙂

The Actual #10 Tooth

So I made a boo boo when I posted Charlie’s picture the other day, thinking I was more behind with tooth updates than I actually was. 🙂  He was indeed the owner of lost tooth #9 and yesterday Emily told me about the actual #10 tooth.  Not sure if it “counts,” because she lost it at home, but it’s a lost tooth nonetheless. 🙂  Congrats, Em!
